Guru Bramha Guru Vishnu – The Story Behind the Sacred Verse

Guru Brahma

Guru Vishnu

Guru Devo Maheshwara

Guru Sakshat Parabrahma

Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah

Almost everyone knows this sacred verse. It is recited in schools, temples, and homes. But very few know how it originated, who first uttered it, and the profound devotion that gave birth to it.

This is not merely a verse. It is the echo of unwavering Guru Bhakti.

Long ago, there lived a poor boy named Kautsa. Recognizing his sincerity and thirst for knowledge, a great teacher named Vidyadhara brought him into his ashram and taught him every branch of learning he possessed. Kautsa served his guru with humility and gratitude, absorbing knowledge not just through study, but through devotion.

One day, the guru had to leave the ashram for several days. During his absence, Kautsa took complete responsibility for the ashram. When the guru returned, he found everything maintained with care and discipline.

After some time, Kautsa’s education was complete. His parents came to take him home. But Kautsa firmly refused. He said he would not leave his guru.

After his parents departed, the guru gently asked the reason. With folded hands, Kautsa said, “Gurudeva, while you were away, I studied your horoscope. It revealed that in the near future you would suffer from a terrible illness. How can I leave you in such a time?”

Soon after, the guru was afflicted with a severe disease. In those days, there was no cure. They journeyed to Kashi, the sacred city, to perform acts of charity and spiritual merit. Seeing the guru’s condition, many people avoided them. But Kautsa did not leave his side. No matter how many advised him to abandon the sick teacher, he refused. Service became his worship. Loyalty became his vow.

Moved by such devotion, the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara — decided to test him.

First, Brahma came in disguise and advised him to leave the diseased guru. Kautsa refused.

Then Vishnu came in another form and gave the same advice. Kautsa remained firm.

Finally, Lord Shiva appeared and asked if he desired any boon.

Kautsa made only one request: “Please ensure that no one ever comes again to advise me to abandon my guru.”

At that moment, the Trimurti revealed their true forms and offered him liberation. But Kautsa spoke words that would echo through eternity.

“My Guru is Brahma to me. My Guru is Vishnu to me. My Guru is Maheshwara to me. It is because of my Guru that I know You. The one who revealed You to me is none other than Parabrahman.”

From that profound realization flowed the immortal verse:

Guru Brahma

Guru Vishnu

Guru Devo Maheshwara

Guru Sakshat Parabrahma

Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah

Instead of asking liberation for himself, Kautsa prayed for his Guru’s liberation. Pleased beyond measure by his devotion, the Trimurti granted moksha to the Guru. Kautsa then returned home, his heart fulfilled.

This story reminds us that a Guru is not merely a teacher of subjects. A Guru is the dispeller of inner darkness. The one who lights the lamp of wisdom within us is no less than the Divine itself.

That is why the Guru is revered as the embodiment of the Trimurti and the Supreme Reality.

To understand this verse is not enough. One must live its spirit
