Understanding Darpaṇa Darśanam – The Inner Reflection After Divine Vision
After receiving darśanam in a temple, most devotees quietly walk away. But our ancestors followed a deeper, more contemplative practice.
Once they had the sacred vision of the Lord, they would not rush out. Instead, they would sit for a few moments inside the temple mandapam or within the prakāra. There, in stillness, they would close their eyes and offer a profound prayer — not for wealth, not for power, but for life itself.
The prayer they recited was:
Anāyāsena Maraṇam
Vinā Dhainyena Jīvanam
Dehānte Tava Sānnidhyam
Dehi Me Parameśwaram
This was not a ritual of words. It was a dialogue of the soul.
When you enter a temple, stand before the deity with folded hands, eyes open, and a calm heart. Absorb the divine form. Let your mind become still.
After stepping out, sit quietly. Close your eyes. Bring that sacred image back into your inner vision. And then pray:
“Anāyāsena Maraṇam”
Grant me a peaceful death — free from suffering, free from prolonged pain.
“Vinā Dhainyena Jīvanam”
Bless me with a life of dignity — where I need not depend helplessly on others, where I bow only in humility and never in humiliation, where I hurt none and am diminished by none.
“Dehānte Tava Sānnidhyam”
At the final moment of my life, when death approaches, let me behold You. Let my last sight be Your divine presence.
“Dehi Me Parameśwaram”
O Supreme Lord, grant me these boons:
• May my life be anchored in remembrance of You. Guide me always on the righteous path.
• I do not ask for wealth, fame, or worldly rewards — for myself or my children. Grant me instead Your sacred presence.
• Stand beside me always. Lead me toward what is noble, truthful, and pure.
When this prayer is offered with sincerity, it transforms darśanam from a visual act into an inner awakening.
This sacred process is called Darpaṇa Darśanam — the “mirror vision.”
The mind itself becomes a mirror. In that inner mirror, we behold the divine form again and install it within the heart’s subtle space.
True darśanam does not end when we leave the temple.
It begins when we close our eyes.
