The Story of 500

An elderly woman walked slowly into a bank one morning, her saree simple, her steps measured with age. She approached the counter, gently handed over her bank card to the cashier, and said in a soft voice, “I would like to withdraw ₹500.”

The cashier glanced at her card and replied curtly, “For withdrawals less than ₹5,000, please use the ATM.”

The old woman looked at her quietly and asked, “Why?”

With visible irritation, the cashier responded, “These are the bank rules. If there’s nothing else, please step aside. There’s a queue behind you.” She handed the card back dismissively.

The elderly woman stood there in silence for a couple of minutes. No anger. No argument. Just silence.

Then she slowly extended her card again and said, “In that case, could you please help me withdraw all the money in my account?”

The cashier, slightly annoyed but curious, checked the account balance.

Her expression changed instantly.

The screen showed a balance of ₹350 crores.

The irritation vanished. The tone softened.

“Ma’am… I’m very sorry,” she said respectfully. “You have ₹350 crores in your account, but currently our branch doesn’t have that much cash available. Could you please schedule an appointment and come tomorrow?”

The old woman calmly asked, “How much can I withdraw right now?”

“Up to ₹3,00,000,” the cashier replied, now extremely polite.

“Then please withdraw ₹3,00,000 for me.”

Within moments, the cashier processed the transaction with utmost courtesy and handed over the neatly arranged cash.

The elderly woman took the money, counted it carefully, placed ₹500 into her bag… and then pushed the remaining ₹2,99,500 back toward the cashier.

“Please deposit this back into my account,” she said gently.

The cashier stood speechless.

The lesson is simple, yet profound:

Respect should never be conditional. It should not depend on appearance, clothing, or perceived status. True character is revealed not when we know someone’s worth, but when we don’t. Every person deserves dignity — not because of what they possess, but because of who they are.
